A visit to Cambodia is deemed incomplete if one does not go to see Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom are just 2 of over one thousand temple ruins in the Angkor Wat Archaeological Park, which is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. The Angkor Wat Archaeological Park is located in northern Cambodia in the Siem Reap area.
We touched down at Siem Reap International Airport at around 0800 local time. I had arranged for our driver cum tour guide, Xiao He to come to pick us up from our hostel at noon and bring us to Bayon. I shall talk about Bayon in my later post. In this post, I will write about Angkor Thom, our first encounter of many temple ruins inside the archaeological park.
To visit temple ruins inside the Angkor Wat Archaeological Park, you must possess an admission pass. Passes can be purchased at the main entrance on the road to the archaeological park. Passes are sold in one-day (USD20), three-day (USD40) and one-week (USD60) blocks. I would advise you to bring a plastic card holder with a neck strap, and wear your pass around your neck inside the temple areas all the time. It will be checked upon each park entry and at major temples. Hefty fines will be imposed for not possessing a valid pass inside the park.

 Heading toward Angkor Thom
Foong, my friend and I each purchased a three-day pass. After that, we headed to Bayon. Bayon is located at the center of Angkor Thom. Angkor Thom, literally means the “Great City” in Khmer Language, was the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer Empire. It was constructed in the late 12th century to early 13th century by King Jayavarman VII. The fortified city of Angkor Thom has a total area of 9 square kilometers. It is enclosed by a square wall 8 meters high and 12 kilometers in length and encircled by moat 100 meters wide.
 Map of Angkor Thom
The city of Angkor Thom has 5 monumental gates, one for each cardinal point, namely the North Gate, South Gate, West Gate and East Gate as well as an additional gate called the Victory Gate located just north of the East Gate. According to Xiao He, the North, South and Victory Gates are usually used to enter into Angkor Thom. The East and West Gates are seldom used. I was told East Gate is the “Gate of the Dead”, and that should tell you why.
The 2 pandas arrived at the Victory Gate of Angkor Thom
We entered Angkor Thom through the Victory Gate. In front of the gate, there is a causeway. Along the causeway stand giant statues of 54 gods or devas to the left and 54 demons or asuras to the right. The 54 devas pull the head of the seven-headed serpent called naga while the 54 asuras pull the serpent’s tail in the opposite direction. This tug-of-war holding on to the naga is a depiction of the Hindu myth called Churning of the Ocean of Milk, in which devas formed an alliance with asuras to jointly churn the ocean for the nectar of immortality.

The next morning when we returned to Angkor Thom, we entered through the South Gate, which is considered the best preserved as well as the most popular access to the city. Indeed, I saw more visitors posing for photos here. There are again 54 devas lining up on the left of the causeway and 54 asuras on the right. The central tower of South Gate, in fact each gate, is capped by 3 face towers sporting four carved faces oriented toward 4 cardinal points.

Amazing Race Asia got to be my favorite reality television game show ahead of American Idol and Survivor. To be honest with you, I have never watched a single episode of American Idol. I had watched a few episodes of Survivor before though.
After The Amazing Race Asia 3 in 2008, I have waited 2 years for this fourth installment of the Amazing Race Asia. I heard this season it would be a race around the world, and has already been dubbed as the “ride of a lifetime”. The identities of the racers were revealed last night at TARA 4 Racers Revealed aired on AXN Asia, did you watch it? I did not watch last night. In fact, I watched the Racers Revealed here a few days ago! Guess what, for the first time in the Amazing Race Asia history, each episode will be aired on AXN Asia TARA 4 website, with episode 1 will be aired on September 16, ahead of the season premieres on September 23.
If you had missed out on the Racers Revealed, here are the 10 teams once again, together with my verdicts on how far each team will go in the race.
1.
Sunaina Gulia, 31, Actress | Dimple Inamdar, 32, Actress. Travel Buddies, India.
A strong combination. Let’s show other teams the true girl powers.
2.
Sahil Banga, 25, Aspiring Actor | Manas Katyal, 23, Reality Show Bachelor. Cousins, India.
Did you hear them saying they join the race with intention to date other girls in the race in the Racers Revealed? I vote them out! Should be eliminated in early rounds.
3.
Natasha Sutadisastra, 24, Legal Admin | Hussein Baron S., 53, Educator. Father and Daughter, Indonesia.
The first ever father-daughter team. An interesting combination but won’t go far.
4.
Nadine Zamira Sjarief, 26, Beauty Queen | Hilyani Hidranto (Yani), 28, TV Presenter. Best Friends, Indonesia.
Who doesn’t like beautiful girls? The producer won’t eliminate them in the earlier rounds, but they certainly don’t have what it takes to win the race.
5.
Ivan Evetovics, 33, University Lecturer | Tengku Hilda, 38, Researcher. Husband and Wife, Malaysia.
Looks to me a strong team. My choice for the Top Three.
6.
Lim Kok Hon (Ethan), 26, Social Worker | Mohd Khairie, 25, Graduate. Friends, Malaysia.
Another Malaysian team, would not to go too far in the race though in my opinion.
7.
Jacinta James (Jess), 27, Tattooist | Lani Pillinger, 27, Model. Party Girls, The Philippines.
Possess good look and hot body, the girls like adrenaline surging activities. My choice for the Top Three.
8.
Richard Hardin, 34, Pro Basketballer | Richard Herrera, 31, Actor. Friends, The Philippines.
The pairs are strong and macho. Girls, look out for their actions! My choice for the Top Three.
9.
Claire Goh, 21, Musician | Michelle S. Ng, 22, Actress. Rebel Pals, Singapore.
I don’t like them. One of the teams which will get eliminated in earlier rounds.
10.
Alan Luk, 32, Actor | Wendy Lee, 24, Actress. Dating Couple, Hong Kong.
I do not like this team either. Expect to see them quarreling a lot in the race! One of the first few teams to get eliminated in earlier rounds.
So, which is your favorite team and which team you tip to win the race? Do tune in AXN each week starting from September 23 to see the actions!

Are you moving to a new house? You have to get a new address plague ready before you move in, right? I am not moving to a new house, but I am too looking for a new address plague. You see, I had moved in my current place since 6 years ago. I bet it should be time to change my address sign.
I prefer wall address plague. I would like to get the lowest price as well as the largest selections of wall address plagues on the market. Besides, I also want to install solar powered wall address lights to illuminate my wall address plague to make it highly visible especially at night.
Are you looking for home address plagues too?
On our last night in Siem Reap, Foong, my friend and I went to the Siem Reap Night Market and the Angkor Night Market. There is nothing much to shout about the night markets. We had done with our souvenir shopping plus we were already too tired to explore the place on foot after a day out in the temples of Angkor Wat. So we decided to go for a 2-hour body massage at one of the many massage outlets dotting the place. It was nearly 2230.
 Siem Reap Night Market
 Angkor Night Market
I fell asleep for a while during the massage session. But I could still hear it was raining cats and dogs outside. I prayed hard for the rains to stop so that we could walk back to our inn after the massage. Time passed very fast. Soon it was the end of our massage session and it was 0030 in the midnight. And it was still raining heavily outside. We were offered green tea. I knew the place was going to close so we had to be out in the rains in the very next moment!
My friend came out with a brilliant idea of asking the massage lady to help us to get a tuk-tuk driver. The idea was greeted with applause by both Foong and me, to which we had no idea our worst nightmare was about to come! Here came a tuk-tuk and we rushed to get into, borrowing umbrellas from the massage outlet. We negotiated the price to be USD 10, was it USD 10, Foong? (Foong said it was USD 2) We felt it was very much expensive considering our inn is just a few streets away.
One can see many of these tuk-tuks lining up Siem Reap streets
I sat down inside the tuk-tuk facing the back of our driver. My friend sat besides me while Foong sat directly opposite to us with his back facing the back of the driver. Inside the tuk-tuk we were discussing about the massage session just now. We felt it was a so-so massage session as the massage concentrated too much on our legs. We would prefer more on our shoulders and backs.
Just as we were talking to each other, the tuk-tuk lost balance as if it hit into an opposite coming object! We were on the ground the moment we realized we had met with a car accident! The tuk-tuk flipped over to 1 side. I was on top of my friend and Foong was on top of me! We were helped to get out of the tuk-tuk by locals. The tuk-tuk driver kept saying sorry to us. Once outside, I realized that our tuk-tuk had run into an opposite coming motorbike! The motorcyclist sat on the ground, moaning in pain. Everything was in chaos.
Then the most hilarious moment came (hilarious only after we recalled the whole incident later). Foong forked out the money and paid the tuk-tuk driver! I was thinking like not to pay the tuk-tuk driver, how could Foong! Later, he revealed he actually thought that we had arrived at our inn! We did not know how the driver could still managed to bring his tuk-tuk back on the road and sent us back to our inn.
Luckily we all survived the crash. My friend had a few bruises in his toes while I had a bruise just below my right knee. Foong came out unscathered. Come to think of it, we were lucky enough not to be thrown out of the tuk-tuk during the clash. If our tuk-tuk bumped into a car, the outcome would have been much worse!
This is one of my most memorable experiences in the entire Cambodia trip.
