I hope this post can answer your query on how to get to Huangshan from Hangzhou. We were on our bus to Tunxi (屯溪), Huangshan City (黄山市) from Hangzhou (杭州) after watching the Impression West Lake (印象西湖) performance the night before. The departure time was 0840 in the morning and we would have to catch our bus at Hangzhou West Bus Station (杭州汽车西站). I bought the bus tickets the day before at local post office at the price of Chinese Yuan 87 per adult. Surprise, surprise! One can buy bus tickets at post office here in China!
We woke up at 0630 in the early morning to catch a bus from Qianwangci Bus Stop (钱王祠路口) to Hangzhou West Bus Station. In case if you miss out on my earlier entry, we stayed at Hangzhou International Youth Hostel (杭州国际青年旅舍), which is just 30 meters away from the nearest bus stop, Qianwangci Stop. The lady at the counter of our hostel advised us on where to get bus tickets to Huangshan City as well as how to get to Hangzhou West Bus Station, so sweet of her! She also told us that the bus journey from our hostel to Hangzhou West takes approximately 1 hour, prompting us to wake up so early despite slept late the night before.
We arrived at Hangzhou West Bus Station at approximately 0805. Hangzhou West Bus Station is one of 4 major bus stations in Hangzhou, with Hangzhou Jiubao Bus Station 杭州九堡汽车站 (formerly Hangzhou East Bus Station 杭州汽车东站), Hangzhou South Bus Station (杭州汽车南站) and Hangzhou North Bus Station (杭州汽车北站) being the other 3. There are hourly buses to Huangshan City from Hangzhou or vice versa, from early morning till late in the evening. Be sure to purchase your bus ticket to Huangshan City, but not Huangshan Scenic Area if you plan to stay overnight at Tunxi. Huangshan City and Huangshan Scenic Area are 2 different locations an hour apart, with the latter is actually a village at the foot of the Yellow Mountain called Tangkou (汤口). The journey from Hangzhou to Huangshan City (Tunxi) takes approximately 4 hours.
Hangzhou West Bus Station is big. In fact, everything is big here in mainland China. What surprised me was the presence of security checkpoint in the bus station! I later found out that there are security checkpoints at all bus stations and train stations in Hangzhou and Shanghai and of course in the Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport too. Not only do all passengers go through those checkpoints, their baggage is also screened. Perhaps this is a good measure to make sure that terrorists cannot bring anything dangerous aboard the bus, what! And train? Too cautious perhaps?
So, my wife and I were on our ways to Huangshan from Hangzhou. You all know that Huangshan City is where the famous Yellow Mountain or Huangshan (黄山) is located, right? Stay tuned to read my trip hiking up to Huangshan, a dream finally fulfilled after I first set my sight on this UNESCO World Heritage Site some 5 years ago!
