One of the highlights of our Batam 1-day trip has to be our lunch at Golden Prawn 555 Seafood Restaurant. I have to say there is nothing much to do and see on Batam Island. Nonetheless, it is an experience.
Our first activity soon after meeting up with a local tour guide was to pay a visit to “Thua Pek Kong” temple in Nagoya. Nagoya is the main town in Batam, Indonesia. This Chinese temple was moved here from Kusu Island of Singapore during 1980s. The tour guide told us that this “Thua Pek Kong” temple is the oldest Chinese temple in Batam.
After the temple, we proceeded to visit a kuih lapis factory. In local language, kuih lapis literally means “layer cake”. I got to see the manufacturing process of pineapple jam kuih lapis. I did not buy any kuih lapis or layer cake though.
Next, we were brought to have our lunch at Golden Prawn 555 Seafood Restaurant in Bengkong. I was told this is the best seafood restaurant on Batam Island. Most tour agencies would definitely bring you to this famous restaurant if you happened to sign up for Batam 1-day trip with any of them.
There are actually 2 restaurants side by side. One is called Golden Prawn 555 and the other Golden Prawn 933. Both restaurants are under the same roof and are consists of quite a few small huts built by woods and bamboos over a huge lake. These stilt huts are linked by plank walkways, offering a calm dining atmosphere. It is like a kelong built over the water.
To clear any doubt that this is a seafood restaurant; one can see many huge water tanks keeping live seafood at the entrance of the Golden Prawn 555 Seafood Restaurant. There are live sharks, lobsters, mantis prawns, oysters, crabs, various varieties of shellfishes. Everything is fresh and all the live seafood is on display for the patron to choose.
The seafood lunch though, had nothing to shout about. Jam has had much better seafood meal before at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Perhaps the tour agency is the one to blame as the lunch is included in the Batam 1-day trip package. I strongly believe I can get much better if I pay for myself!
